Abstract

Living in a more and more degraded environment, which is the result of its behaviour, the human society is turning now towards a new vision of the future: a biobased economy and society. And the main instrument used to reach this goal is the circular economy. Considered “a regenerative system in which resource input and waste, emission, and energy leakage are minimised by slowing, closing, and narrowing material and energy loops”, the circular economy proves to be the only way toward a biobased society, rescuing the environment from total degradation. In this context, EU developed in the last years an action plan for the circular economy. This paper aims to present the role of the forest sector in the development of the European economy towards a biobased society, using the comparative method to emphasize the differences and the specific features of the forest sector in different European countries, including Romania.
